CN2 GIA is the premium internet backbone operated by China Telecom. If you host a VPS in the US and need it to load fast from mainland China, the route your traffic takes matters more than the server specs. CN2 GIA is the best route you can get.
What Is CN2 GIA?
CN2 stands for China Telecom Next Carrier Network (ChinaNet Next Generation). It is China Telecom second-generation backbone newer, faster, and less congested than their legacy ChinaNet (163) network.
GIA stands for Global Internet Access. It is the premium tier of the CN2 network, offering the lowest latency, lowest packet loss, and highest priority routing between China and the rest of the world.
China Telecom Network Tiers Explained
ChinaNet 163
Legacy Backbone
Latency
200-500ms
Packet Loss
5-30%
The original China Telecom backbone. Heavily congested during peak hours (8pm-12am China time). Free routing what you get by default on most cheap VPS providers.
CN2 GT
Global Transit
Latency
100-250ms
Packet Loss
1-5%
The standard tier of CN2. Uses CN2 for the China-side leg but may fall back to 163 for the international leg. Better than 163 but not as consistent as GIA.
CN2 GIA
Global Internet Access
Latency
50-150ms
Packet Loss
<1%
The premium tier. Uses CN2 for the entire route both China-side and international legs. Lowest latency, lowest packet loss, most consistent performance. This is what you want.
Why CN2 GIA Matters
Website Hosting for Chinese Visitors
If your website serves users in China but is hosted in the US, CN2 GIA cuts load times from 5-10 seconds to under 2 seconds.
VPN and Proxy Services
CN2 GIA provides the most stable connections through the Great Firewall. Regular routes are frequently disrupted during sensitive periods.
Business Communication
Video calls, VoIP, and remote desktop between US and China offices require low latency and zero packet loss. CN2 GIA delivers both.
Gaming and Streaming
Online gaming requires sub-100ms latency. CN2 GIA is the only routing option that consistently achieves this between US and China.
Important: CN2 GIA Does Not Bypass the Great Firewall
CN2 GIA is a routing optimization, not a censorship bypass. Your traffic still passes through China firewall inspection. CN2 GIA simply ensures the route is fast and reliable. What you do with that connection (VPN, website, etc.) is a separate matter.

BandwagonHost CN2 GIA-E vs Regular CN2 GIA
BandwagonHost offers CN2 GIA-E (Enterprise), which is a step above standard CN2 GIA. The E variant has even higher priority and more bandwidth allocation. Their DC6 and DC9 data centers in Los Angeles are the most popular choices for China-optimized hosting. Plans sell out frequently see our restock guide.
How to Test Your Route
Not sure if your VPS uses CN2 GIA? Here is how to check:
Run traceroute from your VPS
SSH into your VPS and run: traceroute -I 202.97.0.0 (ChinaNet) or traceroute -I 59.43.0.0 (CN2). Look at the IP addresses in the route.
Identify the network by IP range
202.97.x.x = ChinaNet 163 (bad). 59.43.x.x = CN2 (good). If you see 59.43 IPs for the entire route, you are on CN2 GIA. If 59.43 appears only on the China side, you are on CN2 GT.
Use online testing tools
BestTrace (Windows/Mac) provides visual traceroute with AS number identification. IPCheck.ing and ping.pe show routes from multiple China cities. These tools confirm whether your traffic uses CN2 GIA end-to-end.
Test during peak hours
The real test is 8pm-12am China time (CST). ChinaNet 163 degrades severely during peak hours. CN2 GIA stays consistent. Run speed tests and latency checks during this window to verify your route quality.

Summary
Serving users in China? CN2 GIA is the route you want. BandwagonHost CN2 GIA-E at $49.99/year is the go-to. RackNerd has cheaper CN2 options for lighter use cases. Regular 163 routing is free but basically unusable during evening peak hours in China.
