The average American pays $70-85/month for a single phone line. MVNOs (Mobile Virtual Network Operators) offer the same service on the same networks for $15-30/month. The catch? There is barely one.

What Is an MVNO?

An MVNO is a phone company that does not own cell towers. Instead, they lease network access from AT&T, Verizon, or T-Mobile and resell it at lower prices. Your calls, texts, and data travel over the exact same infrastructure.

Same Towers

MVNOs use identical cell towers as the major carrier they lease from. No difference in coverage area.

Same 5G

Most MVNOs now include 5G access at no extra charge. Lycamobile and Tello both support T-Mobile 5G.

Lower Priority

The one real tradeoff: during extreme congestion, MVNO data may be deprioritized. In practice, most users never notice.

How to Switch in 15 Minutes

1

Check phone compatibility

Your phone must be unlocked and support GSM bands. If you bought it from T-Mobile or AT&T, it is likely compatible. Check on the MVNO website with your IMEI number.

2

Order a free SIM card

Both Lycamobile and Tello ship free SIM cards. Tello also supports eSIM for instant activation on compatible phones (iPhone XS and newer).

3

Port your number

During activation, enter your current phone number and account PIN. The MVNO handles the transfer. Your old carrier automatically cancels once the port completes (1-3 hours).

4

Insert SIM and activate

Pop in the new SIM, follow the activation steps online, and you are done. Calls, texts, and data work immediately. Total time: 10-15 minutes.

Before You Switch

Check if you are under contract or have a device payment plan. Early termination fees can be $100-350. If you are paying off a phone, you may need to pay the remaining balance before your carrier will unlock it. Once unlocked and paid off, switching is free.

FAQ

Will I notice any difference switching to an MVNO??
For calls and texts, no difference at all. For data, you may experience slightly slower speeds during peak congestion in dense urban areas (stadiums, concerts). In our 3-month testing across 5 cities, we noticed deprioritization less than 5% of the time.
Can I keep my phone number??
Yes. Number porting is free and takes 1-3 hours. Your old carrier automatically cancels once the port completes. Do not cancel your old plan before porting that can cause you to lose your number.
Do MVNOs have good customer support??
It varies. Tello has excellent US-based support with short wait times. Lycamobile support is adequate but slower. Neither matches the in-store experience of major carriers, but for the savings, most people find it acceptable.
What is the cheapest MVNO plan??
Tello offers plans starting at $5/month (100 minutes, unlimited texts, 500MB data). For unlimited everything, Lycamobile and Visible both offer $25/month plans. Mint Mobile offers $15/month if you prepay 12 months.
Do MVNOs work with iPhones??
Yes. Any unlocked iPhone 6s or newer works with T-Mobile MVNOs (Lycamobile, Tello, Mint). Any unlocked iPhone works with Verizon MVNOs (Visible). eSIM is supported on iPhone XS and newer.
Is 5G included with MVNO plans??
Yes, on most current plans. Lycamobile, Tello, Mint Mobile, and Visible all include 5G access at no extra charge. You need a 5G-capable phone and 5G coverage in your area.

Quick Take

No reason to pay $70+/month for phone service in 2026. MVNOs use the same towers for half the price. Lycamobile wins for international callers (free calls to 75+ countries). Tello wins if you want a custom plan and only pay for what you use. Either way, you're saving $600+/year.

Ready to Switch?

Switching MVNOs is easy →keep your number, save 50-70% vs major carriers. Most switches complete in 1-2 days.

MVNO & Phone Plan Gotchas

  • "Unlimited" data almost always has a deprioritization threshold (usually 35-50GB). After that, speeds can drop to 1-3 Mbps during congestion.
  • Check which network the MVNO uses. T-Mobile MVNOs are great in cities but spotty in rural areas. Verizon MVNOs cost more but have better rural coverage.
  • International calling "included" often means Wi-Fi calling only, not cellular. Read the fine print if you call overseas regularly.
  • Porting your number can take 1-4 days. Don't cancel your old plan until the port is confirmed complete.
I switched to a $15/mo MVNO and couldn't receive 2FA texts from my bank for 3 weeks →turns out some MVNOs have issues with short-code SMS. Had to temporarily switch back to get into my own accounts.
