Lycamobile USA Review After 6 Months: What Actually Happens

I signed up for Lycamobile in August 2025 as a secondary line. Six months later I have a clear picture of what it's good for and where it falls apart. The international calling is genuinely impressive. Everything else is a tradeoff.

Lycamobile sells prepaid plans starting at $5/month on T-Mobile's network. The savings are real. So are the catches. Here's the honest breakdown after six months of daily use.

Network and Coverage

Lycamobile is an MVNO on T-Mobile's network. In cities, coverage is fine — calls connect, texts arrive, data works. I used it in San Francisco, LA, New York, and Chicago over six months with no coverage issues.

Rural coverage is where it falls apart — same as every T-Mobile MVNO. A weekend trip to rural Pennsylvania had me running on 1–2 bars for most of the time. Not a Lycamobile failure specifically; that's just T-Mobile's rural footprint. If you regularly drive through areas without T-Mobile coverage, this isn't the carrier for you.

Data Speeds: The Real Story

This is the biggest compromise. As an MVNO, Lycamobile gets deprioritized when T-Mobile's towers are congested. In practice, this means:

Off-peak (before 9am, after 9pm)

Speeds were reasonable — 30–80 Mbps down in my tests. Perfectly fine for streaming, browsing, video calls. You wouldn't notice the difference from a premium plan.

Moderate congestion (morning commute, evening)

Speeds dropped to 5–15 Mbps. Browsing worked fine. Streaming buffered occasionally. Video calls were choppy at times.

Peak congestion (lunch hour in dense areas, events)

Speeds dropped to 1–5 Mbps or lower. This felt like 3G. Video streaming wasn't practical. If you work from a phone or rely on data during peak hours, this will frustrate you.

For a secondary line where you're mostly on WiFi, this is fine. For a primary line you depend on all day, it's a real limitation.

International Calling (The Strong Point)

The $5/mo National plan is for a second SIM you barely use — maybe for a travel line or backup number. No data, only 100 minutes. Useful in a narrow set of situations.

The $23/mo Plus and $29/mo International plans are what most people will use. For international callers, the $6 premium for the International plan often pays for itself in a single call.

Customer Service: Honest Assessment

Bad. Not catastrophically bad, but consistently frustrating. Over six months I contacted support three times:

Issue 1: SIM activation error

Activation page threw an error. Chat support took 45 minutes to resolve. Agent asked me to retry the same steps twice before actually checking the account. Resolution was fine, but 45 minutes for a simple activation issue is too long.

Issue 2: Data stopped working after renewal

This was the worst one — 2 hours across chat and email. Turned out to be an APN configuration reset on their end. Agent escalated, someone fixed it remotely. But 2 hours to fix something that wasn't my fault is not acceptable.

Issue 3: International rate inquiry

The SIM is free on their website (pay shipping) or available at Walmart, Target, and Best Buy. Physical SIM is the way to go — eSIM support is incomplete.

Activation steps:

1.Go to lycamobile.us/activate. Enter the SIM number (on the card) and choose your plan.
2.If you're porting a number, enter your current carrier info. Have your current account number and PIN ready — you'll need them.
3.The activation page may throw an error on first attempt. This is common — just retry. It worked on the second try for me and for most people on Reddit.
4.Insert the SIM, restart your phone, and verify APN settings. On Android: Settings → Network → Mobile Network → Access Point Names → add Lycamobile APN if not automatically detected.
5.For port-ins: your old number stays active until the port completes. Don't cancel your old service until you receive a confirmation text from Lycamobile.

What Happened Each Month

Since this is framed as a 6-month review, here's what actually changed over time.

Month 1

Activation hiccup (expected). Data speeds were good — honeymoon period. International calling to India was noticeably cheaper than my T-Mobile plan.

Month 2

No issues. Started noticing data slowdowns during lunchtime in downtown areas. Switched to WiFi for calls during peak hours.

Month 4

Smooth month. Figured out the deprioritization pattern — avoid data-heavy tasks between noon and 8pm in cities. Adjusted habits.
