Why Lycamobile Wins for International Calling

No other US carrier or MVNO includes free international calling to this many countries at this price. The calls go through T-Mobile HD Voice network not VoIP so quality is identical to a regular phone call.

Runner-Up: Tello (Best Flexibility)

Tello does not include free international calls, but their per-minute rates are among the lowest. Where Tello shines is plan flexibility build your own plan with exactly the minutes, texts, and data you need. If you only make occasional international calls, Tello can be cheaper overall.

When Tello Beats Lycamobile

If you make fewer than 60 minutes of international calls per month, Tello custom plan ($10-15/mo) + per-minute rates can be cheaper than Lycamobile $25/mo. Plus Tello offers data rollover and free hotspot.

MVNO & Phone Plan Gotchas

  • "Unlimited" data almost always has a deprioritization threshold (usually 35-50GB). After that, speeds can drop to 1-3 Mbps during congestion.
  • Check which network the MVNO uses. T-Mobile MVNOs are great in cities but spotty in rural areas. Verizon MVNOs cost more but have better rural coverage.
  • International calling "included" often means Wi-Fi calling only, not cellular. Read the fine print if you call overseas regularly.
  • Porting your number can take 1-4 days. Don't cancel your old plan until the port is confirmed complete.
I switched to a $15/mo MVNO and couldn't receive 2FA texts from my bank for 3 weeks →turns out some MVNOs have issues with short-code SMS. Had to temporarily switch back to get into my own accounts.
